Finding Love through Animal-Assisted Therapy

I recently had a couple come out to my Divide location for a session. As I greeted them in the waiting room, it became clear to me that they were both having a rough morning. It was their first time here at the farm, so I brought them outside and into the corral to greet Sonnet, who was eager to meet her new guests.

As they said hello, I shared “I have a task for you.”

They responded with a look of curiosity. Those who know me understand that I like involving creativity in sessions, and this couple knew me pretty well by now. We have been meeting in Colorado Springs for previous sessions, and they agreed to take the trip out to Divide for a new experience.

"Today, you are going to teach Sonnet a trick," I said.

There were giggles, a moment of silence, and finally one asked, “How?”

The other admitting, “I’ve never even ridden a horse before.”

"Well…” I said. “What do you know about building relationships?"

They thought about it, scanning over the tools they themselves have learned over the past few weeks. “Relationships thrive on proper communication." One said.

Bonding with an animal involves the major key aspects of a healthy relationship: mutual respect, trust, and you guessed it… communication! I handed them a bag of chopped carrots, Sonnet’s lead rope, and gave them their mission. After that, the floor was theirs!

So, what now? Well, they knew what they wanted Sonnet to do, but how will they let Sonnet know what she is supposed to do?

“She’s not getting it.” They admitted. “What should we do?”

But I didn’t give them the answer. Instead, I encouraged them to utilize their own strengths to figure it out. I reminded them that they have come this far, and if they work together, they will soon accomplish this too.

I watched as they began to brainstorm new ideas. They asked each other questions, brought up suggestions, and began to put their ideas to chance. As their confidence grew, so did Sonnet’s. She began to understand them, and trusted that they will give her a carrot when she does the right thing. The smallest of advancements were celebrated with smiles and praise. Challenges were soon just a mere bump in the road as this couple effectively worked together to solve their mission.

“She did it!” The corner of their smiles reached ear to ear.

They never gave up, they conquered something they weren’t quite sure was possible; and probably wouldn’t have been had they not worked together. Today, they became a team!

This is the juice relationships are made of! Respect, trust, and communication. I couldn’t be prouder.
